michéal CASTALDO
Artist/Producer/Songwriter
michéal CASTALDO is an award-winning singer/songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur from New York City. Music is a lifelong passion, and he loves performing his heart-warming Italian songs to adoring audiences.
michéal was born in Calabria in the “tip of the toe” of Italy, is an accomplished pop-classical crossover singer of his native songs, and has fans all over the world, for whom he is the living embodiment of authentic Italian culture.
As a young child when his parents immigrated from Calabria to a lively Italian community in Canada in the 1960s, michéal was exposed at an early age to both American rock & roll and Italian pop music as well as the various Italian languages.
When michéal was nine years old and a member of his Catholic church’s choir, he was chosen by the priest to sing a solo. He was so excited when parishioners came up to him afterward and praised his voice. At that moment, the music bug bit michéal. He began studying guitar, piano, trumpet, and songwriting. He studied voice with the renowned Maestro Pisapia (a protégé of Enrico Caruso, the great Italian operatic tenor), and learned songwriting from the legendary Doc Pomus.
michéal practiced Bel canto (an Italian style of operatic singing), while at same time soaking up the performances of Andrea Bocelli, Elvis Presley, and Tom Jones. This meshing of global musical interests led to his crossover future.
After an education at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, michéal moved to New York City to pursue a professional music career. He developed his skills as a songwriter and producer working with singer-guitarist José Feliciano, trumpeter Chris Botti, jazz saxophonist Teo Macero, and dancer Martha Wash, among others.
Goin’ Krazy, a 1994 song written by michéal for José Feliciano, entered the Billboard dance chart; the first CD for michéal’s former pop band, Lives of a Cell, charted on the Gavin Report; a dance remix for Martha Wash climbed Billboard’s dance charts; and michéal’s Hopeful in 2020, featured saxophone player Paula Atherton. who has since charted at #1 on Billboard. michéal also worked with Wendy Moten (a long-time backup singer for Julio Iglesias), who was a finalist on The Voice (2021).
Though he began singing in English, michéal switched to Italian when audiences responded to his unique hometown repertoire. He performs in Italy’s “official” Florentine language, is equally adept at the Neapolitan and Calabrian languages, and has recorded songs in each language. michéal describes himself as “an evolving, three-dimensional artist/musician transitioning from the classics of the past into modern world music, which includes Latin Music, Dance Pop, Reggaeton-Flamenco pop, and world music.”
A lifetime of Italian living has brought a smooth texture, rich flavor, and romantic hue to michéal’s Italian crossover music. As a vocalist, he has toured North America and Europe, including performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Rainbow Room, Citifield, and Shea Stadium. michéal has performed at high-end event venues, such as the Waldorf Astoria, The Pierre, Cipriani, The St. Regis Hotel, and the Ritz-Carlton, as well as smaller regional venues and Italian festivals across the United States. His passionate singing consistently transports audiences to his native Italian world of beauty and sweeping romanticism.
michéal’s music can be heard on over 50+ Italian-American-Canadian radio stations throughout North America. His music is heard on all streaming platforms, including as Spotify, Apple, Deezer, and Amazon. His CDs are available online through Amazon.com and direct via his website www.michealcastaldo.com.
michéal has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Gigmasters Rising Star Award five years in a row (2009–2013), the IALC 2013 Italian Arts & Culture Award, and the ArtistSignal Top Artist Award in March 2014. He was also a 2012 Classical-Crossover UK Top Male Vocalist Award Nominee and recipient of the 1988 Abe Olman Scholarship Award for Rising Songwriters.
